Northern Ireland's Troubles
The Troubles was a conflict in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to 1998, involving mainly Irish Catholics and British Protestants. It centered on whether Northern Ireland should remain part of the UK or join the Republic of Ireland. Tensions led to violence, bombings, and clashes, with paramilitary groups on both sides, as well as police and military intervention. The conflict also involved issues of identity, rights, and political power, causing significant suffering and disruption. The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 helped bring peace and set the framework for political stability, though underlying tensions occasionally persist.
