Northern Cyprus
Northern Cyprus is a self-declared state located on the northern part of the island of Cyprus. It considers itself independent with its own government, military, and institutions, but it is only recognized internationally by Turkey. The rest of the world regards it as part of the Republic of Cyprus, which is an internationally recognized independent country. The division originated in 1974 following a Greek Cypriot coup and subsequent Turkish military intervention. The area remains politically and economically separate, with ongoing efforts to achieve reunification or a negotiated settlement between the Greek Cypriot south and the Turkish Cypriot north.
