North Atlantic ridge
The North Atlantic Ridge is a major underwater mountain range formed by tectonic plates diverging beneath the Atlantic Ocean. It stretches from the Arctic Ocean down through the Atlantic, creating a continuous chain of volcanic activity and new crust formation. As the plates pull apart, magma rises from below the Earth's surface, solidifies, and gradually builds up this underwater mountain range. This process also causes seafloor spreading, contributing to the shifting positions of continents over geological time. The ridge plays a key role in Earth's geology, ocean circulation, and the development of marine ecosystems in the Atlantic region.
