Node of Ranvier

The Node of Ranvier is a small gap in the myelin sheath that surrounds nerve fibers (axons). These gaps allow electrical signals called impulses to jump quickly from one node to the next along the nerve, speeding up communication. Instead of traveling smoothly all along the nerve, the impulse "hops" through these gaps, which enhances how fast signals move through the nervous system. This rapid transmission is crucial for many bodily functions, such as reflexes and muscle control, making the Node of Ranvier essential for efficient nerve signaling.
