Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE)

Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) measures how effectively plants or crops absorb and utilize nitrogen from the soil to grow. It indicates the proportion of applied nitrogen fertilizers that is actually taken up by plants, rather than lost to the environment through leaching or gas emissions. High NUE means more of the nitrogen fertilizer benefits the plants and less nitrogen is wasted or causes pollution. Improving NUE helps increase crop yields sustainably, reduces costs for farmers, and minimizes environmental impacts such as water contamination and greenhouse gas emissions.
