Nitriding
Nitriding is a heat-treating process used to strengthen metal parts, especially steel. It involves heating the metal in a nitrogen-rich environment, causing nitrogen atoms to diffuse into the surface. This creates a hard, wear-resistant outer layer called a nitrided case, which improves the part’s durability and resistance to corrosion without significantly changing its size or shape. Nitriding is commonly used for components that experience friction and stress, such as gears, shafts, and valves, enhancing their performance and lifespan.
