Nicaragua v. United States

Nicaragua v. United States was a case at the International Court of Justice where Nicaragua accused the U.S. of violating international law by supporting rebels (contras), mining Nicaragua’s harbors, and interfering with its sovereignty during the 1980s. Nicaragua sought compensation for damages and a ruling that the U.S. actions were illegal. The U.S. argued it was assisting neighboring groups against communist threats and that the court lacked jurisdiction. In 1986, the ICJ ruled largely in favor of Nicaragua, finding the U.S. had violated international law, but the U.S. did not comply with the judgment.
