Ngāti Toa

Ngāti Toa is a prominent Māori iwi (tribe) from the Te Waipounamu (South Island) of New Zealand, with strong roots in the Wellington region as well. Founded in the early 19th century by the legendary chief Te Rauparaha, Ngāti Toa played a significant role in regional history and land rights. They are known for their rich cultural heritage, unique haka, and contributions to New Zealand’s history, including resistance and negotiations during European colonization. Today, Ngāti Toa continues to celebrate its traditions, maintain its language, and advocate for its members' interests and sovereignty.
