Ngāi Tahu (Māori iwi)
Ngāi Tahu is the largest Māori tribe (iwi) in New Zealand, primarily based in the South Island. Traditionally, they are descendants of the Māori explorer Kupe and have a rich history rooted in fishing, hunting, and land stewardship. Today, Ngāi Tahu actively manages resources, cultural practices, and economic ventures to support their people and preserve their heritage. Their administrative body, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, works to promote language, arts, and social wellbeing, while also engaging in negotiations and treaties with the New Zealand government to protect their rights and assets.
