The New York Cosmos is a professional soccer team based in New York City. Originally founded in 1970, they became famous for attracting international stars like Pelé and helping popularize the sport in the United States during the 1970s and early 1980s. Although the original team folded in 1985, the Cosmos name was revived in 2010 for a new, competitive team that plays in the lower divisions of American soccer.
