Neutron magic numbers are specific counts of neutrons in an atomic nucleus where the nucleus is especially stable. These numbers (like 2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, and 126) correspond to complete shells of neutrons within the nucleus, similar to how electrons fill shells around an atom. When a nucleus has a neutron number at these magic numbers, it tends to be less reactive and more tightly bound, resulting in increased stability. This concept helps scientists understand why certain isotopes are more common and stable than others.
