Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) is a rare group of genetic disorders that cause progressive brain damage. It involves the buildup of certain fats and proteins called lipofuscin in nerve cells, which impairs their function. This leads to symptoms like vision loss, seizures, behavioral changes, and eventually loss of motor skills and cognition. NCLs typically start in childhood and worsen over time. They are inherited conditions, meaning they run in families. While there is no cure, supportive treatments may help manage symptoms, and ongoing research aims to find better therapies.
