Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) is a rare but serious reaction to certain medications used to treat mental health conditions like schizophrenia. It typically develops quickly and is characterized by high fever, muscle stiffness, confusion, sweating, and irregular heartbeat. NMS occurs due to a sudden imbalance in brain chemicals caused by these drugs, leading to severe muscle and nervous system symptoms. It requires immediate medical attention, as it can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Treatment usually involves stopping the offending medication, providing supportive care, and sometimes administering specific medications to manage symptoms.
