Neurofilaments

Neurofilaments are specialized, thread-like proteins that form part of the structural framework inside nerve cells (neurons). They act like scaffolding, supporting the proper shape and strength of neurons, especially their long extensions called axons, which transmit signals throughout the body. These filaments help maintain neuron stability, facilitate efficient nerve signal transmission, and influence how neurons grow and repair. Because neurofilaments are abundant and stable, they are also used as biomarkers to assess nerve health and diagnose neurodegenerative diseases when they are found in elevated levels in bodily fluids.
