Neurofibromatosis type II
Neurofibromatosis type II (NF2) is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of benign tumors, called schwannomas, on the nerves responsible for hearing and balance, mainly the vestibulocochlear nerve. These tumors can cause symptoms like hearing loss, ringing in the ears, dizziness, and balance problems. NF2 usually develops in early adulthood and can also lead to tumors on other nerves and areas of the nervous system. It is caused by mutations in a gene that normally helps regulate cell growth, leading to tumor development. While there is no cure, treatment focuses on managing symptoms and controlling tumor growth.
