Neuraminidase inhibitors
Neuraminidase inhibitors are medications used to treat influenza (the flu). They work by blocking the action of an enzyme called neuraminidase, which the flu virus needs to spread from infected cells to healthy ones. By inhibiting this enzyme, these drugs prevent the virus from multiplying and spreading within the body, helping to reduce the severity and duration of flu symptoms. Common examples include oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza). They are most effective when taken early in the illness, ideally within the first two days of symptoms appearing.
