Neumatic notation
Neumatic notation is a system used in medieval music to represent melodic movements and pitches using symbols called neumes. These symbols indicate the direction, relative pitch, and sometimes the rhythm of the chant or melody, functioning as visual cues for singers. Unlike modern notation, neumatic notation doesn’t specify exact notes or timing but provides a flexible guide to perform chant melodies. It was a precursor to the modern staff notation, helping performers interpret musical lines in religious and liturgical contexts during the Middle Ages.
