Net Tonnage
Net tonnage (NT) is a measure used to estimate the usable cargo space within a ship. It is calculated by subtracting the space used for the ship's engine, machinery, and other non-cargo areas from the total internal volume. This measurement helps determine the ship's carrying capacity for commercial purposes, affecting fees and regulations. Unlike weight, net tonnage is a volume-based measure expressed in "tons," but it doesn’t reflect the actual weight of the ship or its cargo. It provides a standardized way to compare the cargo-carrying capacity of different vessels.
