Nestorian Schism

The Nestorian Schism was a theological disagreement in the 5th and 6th centuries between different Christian groups about the nature of Jesus Christ. Nestorius, a bishop, emphasized a distinction between Jesus’ divine and human natures, causing some to think he separated them too much. This led to accusations of heresy, and the disagreement resulted in the splitting of the church into factions: the Eastern Orthodox and the Assyrian Church of the East. The schism reflects early efforts to understand and define Christ’s identity, and it shaped the development of Christian theology and church relations.
