Nerve root
A nerve root is the initial segment of a spinal nerve as it exits the spinal cord through spaces between the vertebrae. Think of it as the "entry point" where signals travel from the spinal cord to other parts of the body, and vice versa. Nerve roots carry sensory information, like pain or sensation, and motor commands to muscles. If a nerve root becomes irritated or compressed—due to injury or disc problems—it can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in specific areas served by that nerve. These roots are essential for communication between the brain, spinal cord, and the body.
