Nernst's law, also known as the Nernst equation, describes how the electrical potential of an electrochemical cell depends on the concentrations of the reactants and products involved. It states that the voltage produced by a cell changes logarithmically with the ratio of these concentrations. Essentially, if one side of the reaction has a higher concentration of a substance, the cell’s voltage adjusts accordingly, reflecting how nature tends to balance chemical and electrical energy. This principle helps predict how voltage varies under different conditions, crucial for designing batteries, sensors, and understanding biological processes.
