Nephrostomy

A nephrostomy is a medical procedure that creates a temporary or permanent opening between the kidney and the outside of the body. This allows urine to drain directly from the kidney when normal flow is blocked due to causes like kidney stones, tumors, or infection. A thin tube called a nephrostomy tube is inserted through the skin into the kidney, enabling urine to bypass the urinary tract. This helps prevent kidney damage, relieve pain, and manage infections. The procedure is usually done under imaging guidance to ensure accurate placement and can be performed under local or general anesthesia.
