nephrogenic systemic fibrosis

Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) is a rare but serious condition that can occur in people with severe kidney problems after exposure to certain MRI contrast agents containing gadolinium. Gadolinium is a metal used to improve MRI images. In those with compromised kidney function, the body may have difficulty eliminating gadolinium, leading to its buildup and triggering abnormal fibrosis—thickening and hardening of the skin and internal tissues. Symptoms typically include skin thickening, redness, and stiffness, especially in the limbs. NSF can also affect organs, making it a critical condition requiring careful management and avoidance of risky contrast agents in vulnerable patients.
