Neonatal Neutropenia

Neonatal neutropenia is a condition in newborns characterized by a lower-than-normal number of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell crucial for fighting infections. This condition may occur due to genetic factors, maternal infections, or certain medications taken during pregnancy. Infants with neutropenia are at a higher risk of infections, though many may recover without complications. Monitoring and supportive care are essential, and in some cases, treatment may involve medications to stimulate white blood cell production. Most babies outgrow neutropenia as their immune systems mature.
