Neonatal Hypoglycemia
Neonatal hypoglycemia occurs when a newborn's blood sugar levels are too low, which can affect their energy and brain function. This condition is common shortly after birth, especially in babies born to mothers with diabetes, or those born premature or small for their gestational age. Symptoms may include irritability, tremors, poor feeding, or lethargy. Prompt recognition and treatment are important to prevent potential complications. Treatment often involves feeding the baby or, in more serious cases, administering glucose directly. Most babies recover fully with appropriate care.
