Nembutsu (as it relates to Nichiren)
Nembutsu is a Buddhist practice that involves chanting or reciting the phrase "Namu Amida Butsu" to express faith in Amida Buddha’s vow to assist all beings in reaching enlightenment. In the context of Nichiren Buddhism, Nembutsu is viewed critically because Nichiren emphasized reliance on the Lotus Sutra, specifically chanting "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo," as the supreme practice for attaining enlightenment. While traditional Pure Land Buddhism sees Nembutsu as a direct expression of faith and devotion, Nichiren considered it insufficient alone and prioritized the Lotus Sutra as the ultimate teaching.
