Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a type of bacteria responsible for the sexually transmitted infection known as gonorrhea. It primarily infects the mucous membranes of the genital tract, but can also affect the rectum, throat, and eyes. The bacteria are transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person. Symptoms can include pain during urination, abnormal discharge, and irritation, but some people may not show symptoms. If untreated, gonorrhea can lead to serious health problems like pelvic inflammatory disease or infertility. It is typically diagnosed with laboratory testing and is usually treated effectively with antibiotics.
