neglect theory

Neglect theory suggests that when individuals experience trauma, especially from childhood, they may develop an unconscious pattern of ignoring or disregarding their own emotional needs and feelings. This can happen if abusive, neglectful, or unresponsive environments teach them that their feelings are unimportant or unsafe. As a result, they might struggle to recognize or trust their own inner experiences, leading to difficulties in emotional regulation, forming close relationships, or feeling worthy. Essentially, neglect creates a disconnect within oneself, affecting how individuals perceive and respond to their emotions and needs throughout life.
