NCL (Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis)
Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL), also known as Batten disease, is a group of rare genetic disorders that cause progressive neurological decline. It results from the buildup of abnormal, lipopigment substances in brain cells, leading to cell damage and death. Symptoms typically include vision loss, seizures, cognitive decline, and movement problems, usually starting in childhood. There is currently no cure, and the disease gradually worsens over time. NCL is inherited, meaning it runs in families due to specific genetic mutations affecting cellular waste processing. It requires medical management to improve quality of life and address symptoms.
