navicular disease
Navicular disease is a common hoof condition in horses, involving degeneration or inflammation of the navicular bone and surrounding tissues in the hoof’s rear region. It causes chronic, often intermittent lameness, particularly when the horse is worked or exercised. The disease affects the deep digital flexor tendon and the navicular bursa, leading to discomfort and pain. Factors like hoof conformation, uneven weight distribution, or previous injuries can contribute. While it cannot always be cured, management includes proper trimming, shoeing, medication, and sometimes more advanced treatments to reduce discomfort and improve the horse’s quality of life.
