NATO bombing of Yugoslavia
The NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999 was a military campaign by NATO forces aimed at stopping human rights abuses and ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, a region of Yugoslavia. After diplomatic efforts failed, NATO conducted airstrikes against Serbian military and government targets to weaken their capacity to suppress the Kosovo Albanian population. The campaign lasted about two months, resulting in significant infrastructure damage and civilian casualties. It was controversial, balancing the goal of humanitarian intervention against the legal and ethical questions of using force without UN approval. The operation ultimately contributed to ending the conflict in Kosovo.
