National Temperance Society

The National Temperance Society was a U.S. organization founded in 1865 aimed at promoting abstinence from alcohol. It sought to reduce alcohol consumption to improve individuals’ health, families’ well-being, and society's overall stability. The society organized educational campaigns, supported temperance laws, and encouraged people to choose sobriety. It played a significant role in the larger Temperance Movement, which eventually contributed to the Prohibition era. The society believed that limiting or stopping alcohol use would lead to a more virtuous and productive society.
