National Temperance Movement

The National Temperance Movement was a social and political campaign in the 19th and early 20th centuries that aimed to reduce or eliminate the consumption of alcohol. It emerged from concerns about alcohol’s negative effects on individuals and families, including health problems, domestic violence, and social disorder. The movement promoted moderation or complete abstinence and often supported laws restricting alcohol sales, culminating in the Prohibition era (1920-1933) in the United States. Its goal was to improve public morals, health, and social stability through education, advocacy, and legislative action.
