National Judicial Appointments Commission (India)

The National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) was proposed by India to oversee the appointment and transfer of judges to the Supreme Court and High Courts, aiming to make the process more transparent and accountable. Comprising members from the judiciary, executive, and civil society, the NJAC sought to reduce political influence. However, in 2015, the Supreme Court struck down the NJAC as unconstitutional, reaffirming that such appointments should be handled solely by a judiciary-led committee. Currently, judicial appointments in India are primarily made by the Collegium system, which involves senior judges, maintaining judicial independence.
