National Institute of Fusion Science
The National Institute of Fusion Science (NIFS) is a research organization in Japan dedicated to studying nuclear fusion—the process that powers the Sun—and developing it as a potential clean and abundant energy source. They focus on creating controlled fusion reactions using powerful magnetic devices called tokamaks, which contain and heat plasma—a super-hot, ionized gas—long enough to produce energy. NIFS's work aims to unlock fusion as a sustainable energy solution, understanding plasma behavior, and advancing fusion science to eventually provide a safe, eco-friendly alternative to traditional power sources.
