National Estuarine Research Reserves
National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERRs) are protected areas along U.S. coastlines that focus on studying and preserving estuarine ecosystems—where freshwater meets saltwater. These reserves serve as living laboratories for researchers to understand natural processes and human impacts on coastal environments. They also offer educational programs and community outreach, helping local populations engage with and protect their natural resources. NERRs aim to promote sustainable management practices and enhance science-informed decision-making to preserve these vital ecosystems for future generations. There are currently 29 reserves across the United States, each dedicated to preserving unique coastal habitats.
