National Defense Education Act

The National Defense Education Act (NDEA), enacted in 1958, was a U.S. law designed to strengthen the country's education system during the Cold War, especially in science, math, and foreign languages. It was motivated by concerns over national security and technological competition with the Soviet Union. The act provided funding for schools, colleges, and students, supporting the development of skilled scientists, engineers, and language experts. It also promoted research and improved educational materials, aiming to prepare Americans for technological and defense challenges ahead.
