National Council of Switzerland

The National Council of Switzerland is the lower house of the Swiss Federal Assembly, representing the Swiss population. It consists of 200 members elected every four years through proportional representation, with seats apportioned based on each canton’s population. Its main role is to propose, amend, and approve federal legislation, as well as scrutinize government actions. The National Council works alongside the Senate (Council of States) to shape national policies, ensuring diverse regional interests are represented and influencing the country's laws and budget decisions within Switzerland's federal system.
