National Commission for Truth and Reconciliation (Chile)
The National Commission for Truth and Reconciliation in Chile was established in 1990 to investigate and document human rights abuses committed during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). Its goal was to uncover facts about forced disappearances, torture, and killings, providing acknowledgment and accountability. The commission helped lay the groundwork for transitional justice, promoting national healing and ensuring such abuses are recognized and remembered. While it could not prosecute violations, its findings contributed to public awareness, reconciliation efforts, and the ongoing process of addressing past injustices in Chile.
