Nasutitermes (termite genus, often confused with ants)

Nasutitermes is a genus of termites known for their unique ability to produce a sticky, defensive chemical from a specialized "nasus" or snout. Unlike common ants, these termites build large, carton-like nests and are primarily wood and plant material consumers. They are social insects living in colonies with distinct roles, including workers, soldiers, and a reproductive king and queen. Their foraging and nesting habits can sometimes cause structural damage, but they are also important ecosystem decomposers. Despite superficial similarities, Nasutitermes are true termites, distinguished by their head shape and defensive secretions.
