Nanjing Republic
The Nanjing Republic, also known as the Republic of China, was a government that ruled China from 1912 to 1949 after the fall of the Qing Dynasty. Founded by Sun Yat-sen, it aimed to modernize and unify China amidst internal conflicts and external threats. The government was based in Nanjing and marked China’s transition from imperial rule to a republican system. Despite efforts at reform, the era faced challenges like warlord conflicts, Japanese invasion, and political instability. Ultimately, the Chinese Civil War led to the defeat of the Nationalist government, which retreated to Taiwan, while the mainland became the People's Republic of China.
