Nail infections
Nail infections occur when fungi or bacteria enter the nail or surrounding skin, leading to changes like discoloration, thickening, or brittleness of the nail. Fungal infections, called onychomycosis, are common and often start as a white or yellow spot under the tip of the nail. Bacterial infections can cause redness, swelling, and pus. Factors such as moisture, injury, or poor hygiene can increase risk. Treatment typically involves antifungal or antibacterial medications, and maintaining good foot and hand hygiene helps prevent infections. If untreated, nail infections can worsen and affect nail strength and appearance.
