Myxomatosis

Myxomatosis is a viral disease that affects rabbits, caused by the myxoma virus. It spreads through insect bites, such as fleas or flies, or direct contact between rabbits. The virus leads to severe swelling around the eyes, face, and ears, along with skin tumors, lethargy, and high fever. Infected rabbits often develop respiratory issues and may die within two weeks. Myxomatosis is highly contagious and can cause significant mortality in rabbit populations. It is used as a biological control in some areas to manage overpopulation, and vaccination is available to protect domestic rabbits.
