Myxococcus xanthus
Myxococcus xanthus is a type of bacteria known for its complex social behavior and ability to form large, coordinated groups. It lives in soil and preys on other microorganisms by moving across surfaces using tiny, hair-like structures called pili. When food sources are scarce, these bacteria communicate and assemble into a multicellular structure called a fruiting body, producing spores that can survive harsh conditions. Unlike many bacteria that remain solitary, Myxococcus xanthus demonstrates collective behavior, enabling it to adapt and thrive in challenging environments.
