Myeloperoxidase (MPO)

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is an enzyme found mainly in certain immune cells called neutrophils, which are part of the body's defense system. MPO helps neutrophils kill bacteria, fungi, and other pathogens by producing substances that destroy these invaders. However, MPO can also contribute to inflammation and damage when immune responses become uncontrolled or chronic. Levels of MPO in the blood can serve as markers of inflammation and are often measured to assess the risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attacks, since high MPO activity is linked to the development of arterial plaques.
