Mycobacterium Avium Complex (MAC)

Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is a group of bacteria that can cause infections, mainly in individuals with weakened immune systems. These bacteria are commonly found in soil, water, and dust. MAC infections often affect the lungs, causing symptoms like cough, fever, and weight loss, but can also spread to other parts of the body. While healthy people usually don’t get sick from MAC, those with immune issues, such as HIV/AIDS, are at higher risk. Treatment typically involves a combination of antibiotics over several months to effectively control the infection.
