Myōan Eisai

Myōan Eisai (1141–1215) was a Japanese Buddhist monk who played a key role in spreading Zen Buddhism and green tea cultivation in Japan. He traveled to China, learned about Zen practice and tea, and returned to Japan to promote these teachings. Eisai emphasized meditation and mindfulness, believing they could improve individuals and society. He is also credited with popularizing tea as a healthful beverage among Japanese monks and elites, laying the foundation for the cultural significance of tea in Japan. His efforts helped integrate Zen philosophy into Japanese culture, influencing meditation practices, aesthetics, and the tea ceremony.
