Mustard procedure
The Mustard procedure is a surgical treatment for transposition of the great arteries (TGA), a condition where the main arteries leaving the heart are switched. In this operation, surgeons create new connections inside the heart to redirect blood flow: they build a baffle (a sort of pathway) within the atria to reroute oxygen-poor blood to the lungs for oxygenation and oxygen-rich blood to the body. This procedure enables the heart to pump blood correctly without needing a heart-lung machine, usually performed in newborns to ensure proper oxygen delivery and improve survival prospects.
