Music intervals
Music intervals are the distances between two pitches, defining how much higher or lower one note is compared to another. These intervals are measured by counting the steps between notes on a musical scale, like counting rungs on a ladder. For example, the distance between C and D is a whole step, while from C to E is a two-step interval called a major third. Intervals are fundamental in creating harmony and melody, contributing to the emotional character of music. They are classified as major, minor, perfect, diminished, or augmented, each with specific sound qualities and functions.
