Murray Schafer
Murray Schafer was a Canadian composer and sound researcher known for his pioneering work in environmental acoustics, the study of sounds in our surroundings. He believed that listening to and understanding these sounds can deepen our connection to nature. Schafer coined the term “soundscape,” referring to the acoustic environment as experienced by people. He highlighted the importance of preserving natural soundscapes, which can be disrupted by noise pollution. His work encourages us to appreciate the sounds around us, recognize the impact of human activity on our auditory environment, and advocate for more mindful listening and sound design.
